Fine says while most people believe they gain about five pounds over the holidays
and winter months. They Then try to take it off in January when all are flocking to
the gyms.

\"For most , it\'s the holiday season and a might be a combination of comfort foods,
lack of exercise and the weather outside, in other individuals it might be something
else.\"

This finding runs contrary to the popular belief that most people gain from five to
ten pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year\'s Day.

This conclusion was reached by researchers at the National Institute of Child Health
and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive
and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The results of their study appear in the March 23 New
England Journal of Medicine. \"These findings suggest that developing ways to avoid
holiday weight gain may be extremely important for preventing obesity and the
diseases associated with it,\" said NICHD Director Duane Alexander, M.D.

According to government statistics, more than half of all adult Americans are
overweight, as defined by body mass index, said Jack A. Yanovski, M.D., Ph.D., the
study\'s principal investigator and head of NICHD\'s Unit on Growth and Obesity. Body
mass index is a mathematical formula used to correct body weight to account for a
person\'s height. According to Dr. Yanovski, the latest national surveys show that
54.9 percent of Americans have a body mass index of 25 or more and are overweight,
while 22.3 percent are considered obese, with a body mass index of 30 or more.

Make sure you get enough sleep ,usually 6 - 8 hours a night says Fine.

Fine recommends starting a exercise program to speed up you metabolism. Weight
training is the key. To many people spend time on the cardio machines only. that\'s a
big mistake says Fine. The new and latest information we have
as trainers says weight training with light to moderate weight and high reps will
burn many more calories, tone your muscles and help you lose fat 200% faster than
cardio alone.

Also make sure your eating many small meals every day, about 5 is great. Breakfast
is the most important one. Also make sure your eating protein every time you eat,
EVERY TIME!

When it comes to cutting cravings, he recommends eating something sweet, indulge the
urge - within reason.

\"If the cravings really intensify, slice up an apple or slice up an orange and have
that,\" she said. \"All your brain wants is something sweet.\"

People should aim to get in 60 minutes of continuous exercise three times a week,
which can be even be split into 10-minute segments, said Fine, fitness director for
Executive Edge Consulting.

\"If you can\'t get to a gym, use stairs, buy some dumbbells and workout at home.

Walking , taking the stairs will also dramatically speed up your metabolism.

Business goes crazy right after new years as people want to make their New Years
resolutions come true. Losing weight or wanting to work out at home.

\"Once they\'ve found they\'ve put on weight they\'re more motivated, so usually I would
increase the intensity of our exercises and maybe give them less rest periods or
make them more active for the hour we\'re together,\" he said, citing increasing time
devoted to cardio as an example.

Fine recommends that individuals who want to shed pounds focus on short-term goals
and mid term goals

\"Keeping a diary of what you eat is also very important , if you don\'t know what
your eating you will probably not be very successful losing weight, he said.

\"You have got to think long term as a lifestyle change. Lifestyle changes usually
take 1 -2 months to implement so don\'t be worried if it doesn\'t happen right away,
it will.

Fine says Life coaching is the key to success. Life coaching is giving the client
the skills to succeed. Goal planning, tracking and life skills are what clients need
to be successful. Unfortunately 90% of personal trainers haven\'t taken and life
coaching courses or heard of life coaching.
